PUC was created out of the energy generated from youth-led, service-learning trips. Therefore, we believe it is essential that we continue to provide young Philadelphians with similar experiences so as to expose them to various models of sustainable community development throughout the nation, and to inspire them to become active agents of change in their own communities.
In our experience, Service-Learning trips are extremely powerful and effective ways to engage young people in the deep processes of transformative learning, as well as to mobilize them to become more active in local issues that affect them directly; particularly when these trips are organized and led by young people themselves. Therefore, we plan to continue organizing service learning trips to a variety of locations throughout the nation including New Orleans, New York, New Jersey, and Milwaukee, to name a few.
So far, PUC has organized service learning trips to New Orleans to work with Our School At Blair Grocery and Auras Omelette, New York to work with the New York 2 New Orleans Coalition, New Jersey to work with Honey-brook Organic Farm, and Milwaukee to work with and learn from Will Allen and Growing Power Inc.
We plan to continue organizing service-learning trips to generate more enthusiasm, awareness, and engagement from young philadelphians. These trips, then, will also help to develop our base, and the larger and more diverse our network is, the more projects we can support and the more communities we can impact.
